COFFERED CEILING

A coffered ceiling, often arranged in a grid-like pattern creates dimension and decoration. Popular in ancient Greek and Roman architecture, the feature was added from the Palace of Versailles to the Library of Congress. The overhead detail is made by a series of overlapping material. Typically made of wood or plaster, the sunken panels draw the eye upward and elevate the space.
