It’s an age-old question for clients seeking to build a custom home. Who do I hire first, the builder or the architects?
While some questions require an “it depends” answer, this one is easy.
Always start with the architect.
You, the client, benefit when the architect relationship is separate from the contractor/builder. In our niche market, building high end residential homes, mostly in Texas, we are usually asked to get involved 4 to 6 weeks after the architect starts. This is typically just after the initial design has been presented and budget discussions begin.
Gathering the team — architect, general contractor, landscape architect, interior designer, and other key players — before the project starts can help ensure everyone is on the same page and help avoid surprises.
Sebastian works to maintain strong relationships with the architect, out of mutual respect as well as our passion for architecture. We’re driven to execute the architect’s design intent and pride ourselves on creative problem solving.
John Sebastian’s background (as a trained architect), coupled with his passion for architecture carries through our entire staff.
At Sebastian, we view our role as a collaborator with the architect. We work together to bring the artistic vision into form. Architects we’ve partnered with often say that Sebastian makes their life easy and the process a pleasure.
